2. Set Profile: 1880s H804-13 Trade Card Set Today's baseball fans and vintage collectors sometimes compare the game today with baseball we remember as kids growing up in the [whenever], or even from what we have read about the dead ball era from the earliest decades of 20th century. The H804-13 trade card set featured here, however, contrasts the game from somewhat earlier times. The six card set compares "Old Style" and "New Style" baseball from the perspective of the mid-1880s--relative to "the way it was" a decade or two before that. The six cards in the H804-13 set are shown below. (1) The Batter (2) The Catcher (3) The Fielder (4) The Pitcher (5) The Scorer (6) The Umpire As illustrated in the cards, trends in baseball at the time were: batters became more focused catchers donned protective masks fielders found more idle time pitching got faster scoring became more detailed, and umpires gained more respect As with many trade card series the "old style new style" cards were printed in color for use by mulitple advertisers of diverse products, then overprinted (on the front, back or both) for distribution to their customers. The H804-13 cards measure 3 by 4-1/2 inches--a common size for trade cards of the period. The six cards are all veritcally oriented. Each is illustrated with both "new" and "old" style baseball with the title centered at the bottom of the card. While the printer is not identified, all cards are found with the label "C-929" in small type at bottom left. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings) T201 Doughtery/Lord Card Found from Factory 30. A 1911 T201 Mecca "Double Folder" card of Harry Lord (front) and Patsy Dougherty (reverse) that was distributed from Factory 30 of the 2nd District of New York was recently discovered and reported by Pennsylvania collector Cliff Franklin. The card had previously only been reported as being distributed from Factory 649 (see Michael Wheat, "1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders: Setting Precedent for the 20th Century," Old Cardboard magazine, Issue #31, p. 30-36). With this discovery, all 50 cards from the T201 set have now been reported as being distributed from each of the two factories. Congrats to Cliff for discovering and reporting this find.
