2. 1882 H804-11 Circled Position Series Trade Cards Pitcher Catcher One of the more popular of the nineteenth-century trade card sets is often referred to as the Circled Position Series, based on the design and subjects on the cards. The set carries the hobby designation H804-11. The colorful 3-3/8 by 5-1/2-inch cards are framed inside a blue border. Each of the nine cards in the set displays a generic image of a baseball player in one of nine field positions. The player's position is printed along the left or right edge about one inch up from the bottom of the card. Interestingly, the position of Right Fielder is omitted from the series. Instead, the "ninth" position is that of a "Batsman." All players are shown inside a large circle, giving the cards what some describe as a keyhole appearance. Like most trade card sets, the Circles Position Series is printed on light card (heavy paper) stock. The series was produced and distributed in the early to mid-1880s by Cosack & Company, making it one of the earlier baseball trade card sets. A somewhat wordy label in very small type in the blue border at the bottom of each card reads: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1882 by Cosack & Co. in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington." Ad messages for a number of different sponsors are printed on both the fronts and backs of most of the cards. One of the more frequently found sponsor messages is that of Marshall & Ball clothiers. As a result, the set is sometimes referred to as the Marshall & Ball set. Other sponsors as illustrated above include Peck & Snyder (sporting goods), Wright & Ditson (sporting goods), Hindoo Cigars and Edward Malley & Co. (jewelers). Cosack & Company was a leading lithographer and publisher established in 1864 in Buffalo, New York. In the 1880s when the H804-11 set was produced, the company was still headquartered in Buffalo but had facilities in Chicago, New York, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Hartford and Boston. The results of these searches are continuously changing, so check back often to find the most recent listings. 4. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings) Vander Meer Website Launched. A new website commemorating the 75th anniversary of Johnny Vander Meer's record setting back-to-back no-hitters came on-line earlier this month at www.johnnyvandermeer.com. The website includes history about Vander Meer’s career, a photo gallery, a video of Yogi Berra discussing the record, a few selected baseball card images and other fun facts. It was developed by popular children’s author Robert Skead, who also recently released an eBook about Vander Meer titled "Catching Rainbows--the Story of Johnny Vander Meer’s Back to Back No Hitters." Lyman and Brett Hardeman Old Cardboard, LLC. Old Cardboard, LLC. was established in December 2003, to help bring information on vintage baseball card collecting to the hobbyist.  Produced by collectors for collectors, this comprehensive resource consists of three components: (1) Old Cardboard Magazine, (2) a companion website at www.oldcardboard.com and (3) this eNewsletter.
