2. Featured Vintage Set: 1919 PC799 Cincinnati Red's Champions

The first checklist of this month's featured set was published in 1971 by Dan Dischley, editor of The Trader Speaks (TTS issue of May 15, 1971). The relatively obscure set of 24 black and white postcards is designated as PC799 in the American Card Catalog.

At the time that the TTS article was printed, according to Dischley, "only four collectors were known to have ever possessed these postcards." The four collectors were identified as Dischley, James Elder, Wirt Gammon and Al Peterjohn. While many of the postcards have surfaced since that time, they are still considered moderately scarce. Cards of non-Hall-of-Fame players in VG condition typically sell today in the $60-100 range.

The postcards feature full action poses for members of the 1919 Cincinnati Reds, the team that defeated Chicago in the now infamous "Black Sox" scandal that tainted the image of not only both clubs, but with them the sport of baseball itself.

With one exception, the card labeling is found in two lines that are printed within a white border at the bottom of the card. For the one exception--the card for first baseman Jake Daubert--labeling is printed in the background of the image at the top of the card.

The first line of these captions display the player's name in bold all-capital lettering, followed by his position printed in a smaller italic type.

A second line of labeling text is found in two different versions for each of the cards in the set (see example Kopf card at right). One version, apparently issued at the games during the Series, reads "Cincinnati 'Reds' -- Champions of National League 1919." The second version, obviously produced after the Series was completed, reads "Cincinnati 'Reds' World's Champions 1919." Examples of each of the labeling variations is shown below.

According to collector Steve Rice, the version of these that reads "Champions of National League" were made by Feicke-Desch Printing Co. of Cincinnati, whose name is indicated on the back (as shown in example below).

Rice recently told Old Cardboard that "I have acquired a couple dozen of these over the years and all of the ones labeled 'Champions of National League' have Feicke-Desch printed on the back. On the other hand, the ones labeled 'World's Champions 1919' do not say Feicke-Desch on the back, so I don't know who printed them."

The design of four cards (those of Larry Kopf, Roy Mitchell, Bill Rariden and Walter Ruether) are different from others in the set in that they have white borders running on both sides of the card. All cards are borderless (printed with a full bleed) at the top. The design for the example card for Edd Roush shown above is typical for most of the cards in the set. All cards conform to a standard postcard format of 3-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches.

A PC799 Set Profile can be found on the Old Cardboard website along with a Checklist and Gallery of all 24 cards.

4. Sport Memorabilia Auctions Go Hollywood

A staged sports memorabilia auction will be featured on an upcoming episode of HBO's Emmy and Golden Globe winning "Entourage" series. Details are not yet known about the extent of the fictional auction. However we were tipped off by Memory Lane, Inc., who provided the theatrical live auction setting for the show. It may prove to be a worthwhile watch this weekend. The sports memorabilia auction episode is planned for broadcast this Sunday (July 22) at 9 PM Central (check HBO local listings for scheduling in your area). As with most HBO programming, the series is NOT intended for General Audiences; viewer discretion is advised.

With the
National Sports Collectors Convention rapidly approaching (Cleveland, August 1-5), we thought it may be helpful to our readers and sponsors alike to identify where on the convention floor the Old Cardboard sponsors are located. Because of the "vintage" focus of virtually all of our sponsors, the list identifies the booths of greatest interest to Old Cardboard subscribers.

The list at right, ordered alphabetically by sponsor name, provides each sponsor's booth number. The floor plan below more graphically locates each of the exhibitor/sponsors. Note that the main entrance to the convention floor is at the bottom left of the floor plan.

We would also like to remind vintage collectors from the Net54 Vintage Baseball Card Forum that the group will be gathering on Thursday evening (August 2, beginning around 6pm) at the Airport Sheraton Hotel. Brett and I both plan to attend and hope to have a chance to visit with you there.

We hope that all of our readers who are able to attend this year's National have a successful show with many great "finds."

Note: A Printable Version of the floor plan is provided by clicking on the graphic below.

We extend a special "Thank You" to readers Barry Gordan, Paul Reidl and Robert Silverman. All three of these vintage collectors responded to a request in our last eNewsletter (
eNews #38, Item 4) for scans of several cards needed from the "PC-Back Exhibit" set. The card images were needed to help illustrate an article in Issue #12 (Summer 2007) of Old Cardboard magazine as well as for use in completing the Set Gallery on the Old Cardboard website.

Thanks to these contributions from our readers, the full seventy-two-card "master" Set Gallery can now be viewed on the website. All three scans were also used to help illustrate the article in the magazine.

Barry also sent us an image of a card that he has been trying to identify for some time and thought that our readers might be able to assist. If you know anything about the Ruth card shown here, please contact Barry Gordan or Old Cardboard. As seen, the card was produced by "Taylor Chocolates" and appears to be card number three in a multisport issue. It measures approximately 2-3/8 x 3-3/8 inches and has a blank back. As always, we will share any noteworthy feedback with our readers.
