2. "Orange Borders" Checklist Expands Leach Our April eNewsletter (eNews #84) profiled the 1912 Baseball Bats set, keyed to the news of a recently discovered 1912 magazine ad that promotes the set. As a result of the article, we have received feedback from another reader, providing updates to both the Baseball Bats set as well as the closely related Orange Borders set. Both sets are of similar design, cut from candy boxes and both have blank backs. Magee The updates are provided courtesy of Bob Richardson of Boston, who has confirmed the addition of two players in the Orange Borders checklist: Tommy Leach and Sherry Magee. According to Richardson, "despite the tight trims of the cards, they have discernible orange borders and hand-printed names (so they aren't Baseball Bats)." Richardson also notes that "the card you list of Laporte is identical in format to these and, though they deviate slightly from the Orange Borders most often seen (some lack team designation on uniforms and inside corners appear slightly rounded), they have enough properties in common that they are more likely a second series than a separate set." The addition of the Leach and Magee cards bring the total number of known cards in the set checklist to thirty-five players. There are now many thousands of card images on the website and the list continues to grow. We welcome and encourage feedback with checklist additions, card images, error corrections and suggestions. In addition to these additions to the Old Cardboard website, we have significantly expanded and refined our eBay Custom Search Links to make finding vintage baseball cards on eBay easier than ever. The results of these searches are continuously changing, so check back often to find the most recent listings. 4. Hornsby Card Sparks New Interest in "Shoulderless Players" Set "Shoulderless" Hornsby The sale on eBay last week of a card of Rogers Hornsby from the obscure "Shoulderless" Players" card set has stimulated new interest in the cards for which very little is known. The card was eBay Item Number 180676706916 and sold for a final bid of $302. The Hornsby card was previously unknown to collectors and increases the set checklist to eight cards. Other known players in the set are: Walter Maranville, Herb Pennock, E. A. Rommel, Babe Ruth, George Sisler, K. R. Williams and Ross Youngs. As the hobby name for the set indicates, the common design that characterizes all cards is the severely truncated shoulders of the players pictured (the Hornsby card is a good example). The card design includes a sepia-toned image of the player with the player's name and team printed across a light colored panel at the bottom. All cards are blank backed. The cards are considered authentic and originally printed in the 1920s. However, the thin stock used and the straight but somewhat irregular cut size have caused some collectors to speculate that the cards may be cut from an advertising poster. A Set Profile along with a Checklist and Gallery of all eight known cards from the set has been added to the Old Cardboard website. To date, there is only one example known for each player in the set. Although examples from the set were first discovered by the hobby nearly a decade ago, very little is known about the cards today. As always, we appreciate feedback from our readers and would welcome any input or perspective you may have about the "Shoulderless Players" set. 5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings) Minor Leaguer Profiled on "Baseball in Wartime" Website. A detailed and interesting Profile of minor leaguer Bob Stephens has been recently added to Gary Bedingfield's Baseball in Wartime website. Stephens played only one season for the Bowling Green (KY) Barons of the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee League (a Boston Braves affiliate) before becoming a P51 fighter pilot in WWII. His highly illustrated profile includes caricatures and photos of Stephens both as a budding baseball player and as a pilot in the cockpit of his P51 Mustang fighter.
