2. Featured Set: 1924 WG7 Walter Mails Game Cards
The creator and namesake for the card game profiled here was Walter Mails, a pitcher in the late 1910s and early 1920s for several major and minor league franchises. The cards feature 56 players of the period--from both major and minor league teams. They are referenced by hobbyists as set WG7 although the set is not listed in the American Card Catalog. The cards were first cataloged and checklisted in The Sports Collectors Bible.

The black and white card fronts range from portrait to full-body action poses, each with a facsimile autograph included within the image. The player's name is printed below the image along with his position and team. The bottom portion of the card contains the baseball play used in the card game.

The cards are unnumbered and are printed with baseball-themed artwork on the back.
Card backs are found printed in either red or blue. Because the cards are scarce with relatively few sets known, there are differing opinions about which back color is more difficult to find.
The back design is the same in both colors. Over a background of repeating images of baseballs, there are five circles (one in each corner and one at center). Each contains an image of a player (or an umpire) in each of several positions. The center circle is double framed with a "Walter Mails" title between the two framelines.
The cards were distributed as complete decks packaged in a typical sleeve type card box with flaps on each end (see example at right).
Despite the clearly marked "55 Big League Photos" shown on the back of each card box, there were 56 player cards (plus directions) packed in each box. While the player checklists are the same for both the red and blue-backed sets, a number of differences have been noted. Most of these differences reflect team or position changes, suggesting that there was some time lapse between the printing of the two sets.

The Directions Card included with the deck (example at left) provides a brief summary of game rules along with definitions of the various plays printed on the player cards.
