2. Featured Set: 1910 Monarch Typewriter Postcards

This small set of postcards issued by the Monarch Typewriter Company is scarcely known to most vintage collectors.

Containing just six known players, the set features only members of the Philadelphia Athletics baseball franchise. The six players are: Barry, Bender, Collins, Oldring, Plank and Thomas.

Black and white card fronts show full body action poses of the players inside a thick white border. A title at the top reads "Compliments of the Monarch Typewriter Company." The player's full name and position is printed at the bottom of the vertically oriented card.

The backs are printed with a postcard template. The "message" area on the left side contains a summary of the results of the first seven World Series--from 1903 through 1910 (note: postseason games prior to 1903 were considered exhibitions; there were no postseason games played in 1904). Below the World Series summaries is an endorsement for Monarch typewriters by Athletics manager Connie Mack.

Monarch typewriters (see example at right) were manufactured by the Monarch Typewriter Company of Syracuse, New York from about 1904 through 1914--the period in which the baseball card set was produced. They were among the early "visual" typewriters in which the typist could view the page being typed. Previous mechanisms produced type that was hidden from the typist view during typing.

Beginning around 1914, the Monarch brand was merged with the Remington Typewriter Company (a sister unit of the firearms maker). From then, the typewriter models evolved with those of the Remington company and its successors.

A Set Profile, Checklist and Gallery of all six cards in the Monarch Typewriter Postcard series can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

4. Issue #29 (Spring 2013) of Old Cardboard Magazine on Track for May 1 Delivery

Issue #29 (
Spring 2013) of Old Cardboard magazine is now at our printer and will be mailed to arrive in subscriber's hands around May 1 as scheduled. The issue contains a balance of articles from the nineteenth century through the middle of the twentieth.

Our cover article for this issue highlights the historic N167 Old Judge set. By most any standard, the set is considered by vintage collectors as the first traditional baseball set--now aged more than a century and a quarter. For the first time ever in the hobby, we display a gallery that includes all twelve known cards from the set. The well-illustrated article is written by longtime collector Jim Blumenthal.

Two other well known collectors, Mark Macrae and Dan Mckee, have pooled their knowledge of the very scarce 1929 Leader Novelty issue. As with the N167s, the Leader Novelty article also includes for the first time a gallery of all known players found in the set, as well as images of recently surfaced boxes in which the Leader cards were distributed. Other baseball-related sets produced by the company are also briefly profiled in a side panel to the article.

Another article in this issue reproduces the ballpark cartoons of Gene Mack, first published in booklet form in 1950. Perhaps less well known than his cousin and longtime Athletics manager Connie, Gene Mack nevertheless gained widespread acclaim in the 1940s as a sports cartoonist for the Boston Globe and The Sporting News. The fourteen ballparks that he characterizes in his cartoons (representing all 16 Major League teams of the period) serve as an engrossing history of baseball throughout the first half of the 20th century.

Rounding out Issue #29 is an article by Frank Ceresi and John Holway that profiles the 1937 F273-27 Kellogg’s PEP Cereal Sports Stamps. All eighteen baseball players featured in the set are shown along with a premium album page used to store the stamps.

The above feature articles are in addition to the magazine's regular "Editor's Notebook" and "Collector's Dugout" sections and lots of informative messages from our sponsors. Subscriptions to the magazine can be ordered (or renewed) on the Old Cardboard website at www.oldcardboard.com.

5. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)

Vander Meer Website Launched. A new website commemorating the 75th anniversary of Johnny Vander Meer's record setting back-to-back no-hitters came on-line earlier this month at www.johnnyvandermeer.com. The website includes history about Vander Meer’s career, a photo gallery, a video of Yogi Berra discussing the record, a few selected baseball card images and other fun facts. It was developed by popular children’s author Robert Skead, who also recently released an eBook about Vander Meer titled "Catching Rainbows--the Story of Johnny Vander Meer’s Back to Back No Hitters."

Rare and High Grade. A remarkable set of R328 United States Caramel cards is being offered in a Memory Lane auction that closes May 11. The 31-card offering includes all cards from the set except #16 of "Lindy" Lindstrum. However, because only two examples of the ultra-rare Lindstrum card are known to the hobby, most collectors consider the set complete at 31 cards. Most impressively, all 31 of the cards in the offered set are graded PSA 8 NM/MT. Details can be found on the Memory Lane website.
