2. "Shoulderless" Cobb and Speaker Cards Expand Checklist Two new cards--both for players now in the baseball Hall of Fame--have been added to the checklist for an obscure 1920s card group believed to be cut from strips or an advertising piece. They are not cataloged in the American Card Catalog. The two players are Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker. Together, they expand the checklist for the set to eleven players. Both cards were auctioned last month at the Robert Edward Auctions inaugural Fall auction. The cards were auctioned as individual lots. The Cobb card sold for $2252 including buyers premium; the Speaker card closed at $711. The set has taken the hobby nickname "Shoulderless Players" due to the severely cropped shoulders on the poses printed on the cards. Although examples from the very rare set were first discovered by the hobby just over a decade ago, very little is known about the cards today. A card of Rogers Hornsby was discovered and gained some hobby attention in 2011, as reported in Issue #86 (June 2011) of the Old Cardboard eNewsletter. The sepia-toned cards measure nominally 1-1/2 by 2-5/8 inches with the player name and team printed in a white panel across the bottom. They are printed on thin stock with blank backs. The card of at least one screen actor, Norman Kerry, has been reported as part of the set. Kerry is perhaps best remembered for his roles in the 1923 box office hit, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, as well as the 1925 classic The Phantom of the Opera. The cards were originally printed around 1923 or 1924. The thin stock used and the straight but somewhat irregular cut size have caused some collectors to speculate that the cards may be cut from an advertising piece. A Set Profile along with a Checklist and Gallery of all eleven known cards from the set is provided on the Old Cardboard website. To date, there is only one example known for each player in the set. Old Cardboard's Key Events Calendar Leads Net54 Poll The widely used Key Events Calendar on the Old Cardboard website polled first among Net54 Forum members in a poll conducted last month on the Forum's website. As reflected in the poll results below, OC is the leading website that vintage baseball card collectors access to keep track of hobby events. Additional forum member comments are provided in the Net54 Forum thread. We are of course delighted to see the confidence that vintage collectors place in the Old Cardboard website and remain committed to keeping the Key Events Calendar as comprehensive and current as possible. Thanks to reader Chris Wiersbicki, we have expanded the Checklist and Set Gallery for the 1910-1918 Base Ball Stars II Notebook Covers series to include George Gibson. Although curiously labeled "Charlie" Gibson, the cover image is no doubt that of George (Moon) Gibson, catcher for the Pittsburg Nationals (Pirates) from 1905 through 1916.
