2. Set Profile: 1938 PM8 "Our National Game" Pins

The 30 pins in this set are listed as PM8 in the American Card Catalog. However, they are most often referenced as "Our National Game" pins by collectors because of the title printed on the cards on which they were distributed.

The PM8 set contains an abundance of star players, with half of them later inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame.

The 7/8-inch diameter metal disks were produced around 1938. They have a bendable tab on the back rather than the more common pin used in other sets.

Shown about 2 times
actual size
The player image (head protrait only) is printed in shades of two colors (blue and fleshtone) over a cream-colored background. The player's first and last name is placed below the image in all capital lettering followed by his team name (also all caps) on a second line in smaller type. The individual pins unnumbered. The backs are blank and have no markings.

The card stock backing on which the pins were distributed is printed with a border of blue stars and red stripes. In addition to the "Our National Game" title at the top, the subtitle "A Baseball Hero" is positioned below the pin. All card backings for the pins are identical for all 30 players without the player's name. Due mainly to a large find in Oklahoma in the early 1990's, the pins are often found today with the backing still intact.

Signs of scuffing, especially around the top circumference of the pins, are common.

"Our National Game" pins are relatively common. Their value remains relatively low, starting at around $15-$20 for a common player in reasonably good condition. HOFers are somewhat higher.

Little is known about the origins of the PM8 set and several hobby "old-timers" that we contacted had no knowledge of the manufacturer or original distributor. An Internet search results in little if any additional background information. Please let us know if any of our readers have further knowledge of the pins (especially the set's manufacturer or distributor) and we will post an update in a future eNewsletter.

A Player Checklist and Set Gallery of the PM8 are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

4. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings)

OC Website Partially Down. We are happy to report that the Old Cardboard website is back in full operation after a partial outage that lasted several days. While the home page and other key functions remained up, the problem involved links to the important vintage card Set Profiles. We regret any inconvenience to our website visitors but unfortunately were totally dependent on technical support (or lack thereof) from our hosting provider. We consider the outage unacceptable and will be evaluating alternative hosting services going forward. Meanwhile, we appreciate your patience.
