2. Set Profile: 1934 PD9 Ward's Sporties Pinbacks Mystery continues to surround a small and relatively obscure set of eight pinbacks listed in the American Card Catalog as set PD9 Ward's Sporties. Perhaps because the set is listed in the ACC under the category "Bakery Button Inserts," the pins are generally associated with "Ward's Bakery." But that association remains uncertain, as a direct connection to a bakery of that name has not been made. Even the date attributed to the set (1934) is unconfirmed. Although all eight of the players featured in the set played in 1934, they all had careers that spanned well beyond that year. PD9 Front PD9 Reverse The pins measure about 1-1/4 inches in diameter (an example of the PD9 Dizzy Dean pinback is shown at right). The celluloid over metal fronts are printed with a wide red border with white lettering around the circumference that reads "Good Sports Enjoy Ward's Sporties." The player's image is printed over a white background in the center of the pinback. The player's name is printed above his image and the word "Eats" found below, showing at least that the product being promoted is food. The pinback backs are metal without any advertising insert. Half of the players in the set (Dizzy Dean, Jimmie Foxx, Frank Frisch and Charlie Gehringer) have since been inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. The remaining four players are: Jimmie Dykes, Charlie Grimm, Schoolboy Rowe and Jimmie Wilson). Curiously, the pinback of Charlie Grimm seems to have been produced in the largest quantity, as it shows up with noticeably higher frequency among today's collectors. Curious Collector Corrects Colgan's Chips Checklist Vintage collector and Old Cardboard reader Val Kehl has discovered an error in the modern day checklist for the century-old E254 and E270 Colgan's Chips sets. E254 Clymer Minneapolis E270-2 Clymer Chicago Nat'l For years, the "Clymer" card in both the E254 Stars of the Diamond series as well as the E270-2 Tin Tops series has been listed as Bill Clymer. Example cards from both sub-sets are shown at right. The Clymer card also appears in the checklist for the E270-1 Red Borders series, but has not been confirmed by collectors today. As the Manassas, Virginia-based Kehl recently explained in a note to Old Cardboard: I recently acquired an E270-2 Colgan's Tin Tops of Bill Clymer of the Chicago Cubs for my type collection. One reason I was especially pleased to obtain this card is that I was aware that a Clymer had played for the Washington Senators, and I try to obtain type cards of players who played for the Senators at some time during their careers. However, upon checking baseball-reference.com, I note that Bill Clymer played only 3 games of major league ball in 1891 [and for the Athletics; not Minneapolis or the Cubs]. The only other Clymer listed is an Otis Clymer, who did play for the Senators in 1907-1909 and for the Cubs in 1913. Furthermore, the pic of Otis Clymer on baseball-reference.com more closely resembles the pic of Clymer on the E270-2 than does the baseball-reference.com pic of Bill Clymer. Clearly, it appears to me that Clymer is misidentified in the Standard Catalog and by SGC, as well as in OC's checklist. Attached are scans of my E270-2, and below are the links to baseball-reference.com for these two Clymers. Bill Clymer on baseball-reference.com Otis Clymer on baseball-reference.com A look at the images of both players (Bill and Otis) on baseball-reference.com provides further evidence that the player pictured on the Colgan's card is indeed Otis. Images for both players are provided below for more direct comparison to the player featured in the E270-2 Colgan's example. Bill Clymer from bb-ref.com Clymer Colgan's Chips Otis Clymer from bb-ref.com Based on these images and Kehl's explanation above, we at Old Cardboard are convinced that the Colgan's "Clymer" is Otis (not Bill), but will leave it to our readers to judge for themselves. Meanwhile, we have changed our Colgan's Master Checklist to reflect what we are convinced to be the correct identification.
