2. Set Profile: 1954 R714-19 Topps Scoop The "Scoop" series of gum cards distributed by Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. is generally thought to have been issued in 1954, although it was issued in two series, possibly beginning in 1953. The cards are identified as set R714-19 in the American Card Catalog. The set features key events in world history dating back to the middle ages. The series includes just four cards featuring baseball events. As a result, the set also has wide appeal among non-sport collectors. One of the four baseball events, however, celebrates Babe Ruth slamming his sixtieth home run, making that card the key to the entire set. Headlines for the four baseball events featured include "Bob Feller Sets Strikeout Record" (card #27), "Babe Ruth Sets Home Run Record" (#41), "Braves Move To Milwaukee" (#130) and the "26-Inning Tie Game" (#154). The Scoop cards were distributed in both 1-cent and 5-cent packs of gum. The downsized cards (smaller than other Topps issues of the period) measure 2-1/16 by 2-15/16 inches. Card fronts are derived from quality paintings of the historical events. A brief headline and date are also printed inside a white panel on the card front. The card fronts are found both with and without two black "scratch-off" stripes that cover the full width of the card (see example at left). Most of the scratch-off stripes are printed with the messages "Scoop -- Scratch it off, Peel it off" and "See it now!" However, the stripes can also be found in solid black without the messages. It is reported that the scratch-off versions of the card were distributed with all 1-cent packs but on only the top card of those found in the 5-cent packs. Cards with the scratch-off panels intack are less common but still readily encountered by today's collectors. The card backs (see example of Bob Feller card above) are formatted to simulate a newspaper masthead, headline and story along with a black and white image related to the event. Across the top is the name and logo of an actual newspaper of the period along with a location and date of the event. The card number is printed prominently in the top left corner while the word "Extra" is found at top right. All cards identify and promote the next card number in the series, along with the event depicted on the next card, printed in white over a black panel at the bottom, . As indicated, the Topps Scoop cards were distributed in both 1-cent and 5-cent packs. An example of the wrapper used with each package type is shown here. Interestingly, the small print on the 5-cent wrapper on the right states that the pack contains "1 Slab Bubble Gum Plus Picture Cards" without specifying the number of cards in the pack. The 1-cent packs each contained "1 Stick Bubble Gum" along with a Scoop card.
