E-Cards (Early Candy & Gum) For Sale
$495 The offered card is from a scarce set distributed in 1929 by Leader Novelty Candy Co. of Brooklyn, NY. The three dozen of so known players in the set use smaller versions of the same poses found in the more widely distributed 101-card R316 Kashin set. Leader Novelty cards, however, are not only smaller, but found printed in tints of green, purple, red & sepia. The player's facsimile autograph, team and league printed on the card front. The unnumbered set is blank backed. Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirates 3rd baseman Pie Traynor is featured on this card. The card is graded by SGC as grade 5 (EX). This is a very attractive card with one of the highest grades of any known card in the set, with side borders as wide as we have seen. Note: many (if not most) cards from the set are found cut with no side borders at all.
References: Further details about the 1929 Leader Novelty Set can be found on the Old Cardboard website. $1040 This lot features King Cole, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs at the time that the set was issued in 1909. The round disk is part of the scarce and highly sought Ju Ju Drum set identified in the American Card Catalog as set E286. The cards measure about 1-1/2 inches in diameter. The E286 card backs carry a Ju Ju Drum logo and indicate that the small disks can be found with "One in Every Ju Ju Drum." Please see high-resolution scans for condition detail. Further details about the 1910 E286 Ju Ju Drum Set can be found on the Old Cardboard website. $490 This higher grade example of Brooklyn 1st Baseman Tim Jordan is from the scarce E103 Set produced by the Williams Caramel Co. of Oxford, PA. Bright colors and strong corners give the card special appeal. Should grade VG or better. Note: Most vintage collectors will recognize Tim Jordan as the producer of the Tim Jordan Baseball Card Game (see Game Profile). Further details about the 1910 E103 Williams Caramel Set can be found on the Old Cardboard website. $2100 For decades, advanced collectors were unaware of the identity or the origins of the premium offer found on the backs of E270-1 Colgan's Tin Tops and E270-2 Colgan's Red Borders that refer to a "photograph of the World's Pennant Winning Team." Fortunately, we now know that the offer was referring to this 10 by 18-inch photo, printed on heavy paper stock with an embossed border. It features the 1912 National League Champion New York Giants in a classic team pose. The premium was sent by mail rolled up in mailing tube to anyone who, as instructed on the backs of the cards, sent in twenty-five tin tops (not the cards, but literally the tops to the tins in which Colgan's were packed) and a two-cent stamp. Twenty-nine uniformed team members are featured in the photo, including manager John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Rube Marquard, Wilbert Robinson (coach), Fred Snodgrass, Heinie Groh, Fred Merkle and more. Each player is identified in white lettering near the bottom of the photo. A Pach Bros., N.Y., credit stamp appears in the lower left corner. "The New York Baseball Club - Champions National League, 1912" is lettered below the photo. The printed notation in the lower left corner reads "Compliments of the manufacturer's of Adams' Pepsin Tutti-Frutti Gum." The reason for the sponsor name change is another story in itself. BONUS: a copy of Issue #19 of Old Cardboard magazine, which contains a full-color 8-page article about the Colgan's sets (as well as a detailed side panel featuring the Giants Premium, is included with this lot. Further details about the 1912 New York Giants Colgans Premium are provided on the Old Cardboard website. $2850 This card is part of a set of six cards used to promote sales of Babe Ruth candy bars (subtitled "Babe Ruth's Own Candy") in 1928. They are printed in a sepia tone in a vertical 1-7/8 by 4-inch format. The cards are numbered on the card fronts along with a caption for the image. The card backs carry a redemption offer for a baseball autographed by Ruth. The grade is SGC 30 (Good). Further details about the 1928 Ruth Candy set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.. An intriguing story about the background of the Ruth company (and the card set) is told in the article "Babe Ruth vs. Baby Ruth: The Candy Bar War" in Old Cardboard eMagazine #174. $3300 Produced in 1914 by Cardinet Candy Co. of Oakland, CA, cards in this set were used to promote the companiy's Texas Tommy brand candy. The set is listed as number E224 in the American Card Catalog. The nnumbered cards were printed with a player bio on the backs. The offered card of Donie Bush is of the "Type 1" of two varieties. As seen in the hi-resolution photo, the card has been graded as SGC 40 (VG). The very appealing card displays nice corners, without creases, and is exceptionally clean on both the front and back. Would make a very impressive addition to a type collection. Further details about the 1914 E224 Texas Tommy sets (both Type 1 and Type 2) are provided on the Old Cardboard website.. $195 The offered card presents well at VG or better on the front. The back has markings where the original owner neatly crossed out the player's team when team changes were made. An overall good example from a scarce set. Further details about the 1911 Oxford Confectionery set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.. |
