Foreign Vintage Baseball Cards For Sale
Highly sought Japanese postcard produced and distributed in 1929. The front of the postcard pictures Babe Ruth in a typical game-action batting pose, presumably after having just hit another home run. All labeling on front and back is in Japanese. This card has been graded as SGC 5 (EX). Note that the slightly brighter areas on both the front and back of the card are reflections and are not seen on the card itself.
Note: A Set Profile for the Shonen Postcard is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
$360 This lot includes 10 high-grade cards from a somewhat obscure Canadian set. The cards were used to promote a sports program aired on each of two Montreal radio stations. It is a multi-sport set that focuses on hockey but contains cards of 24 then minor league baseball players. Most of the players also played part of their careers in the Majors. Notably, eight of the offered cards feature players that played for the 1946 Montreal Royals as teammates of Jackie Robinson. Click the high-resolution images to see player names and check out the outstanding condition (both front and back) of all cards.
Further details about this set can be found here. $1,250 The five very scarce Kellogg's Corn Flakes postcards in this group represent one-half of the 10 known players in the set. Issued in Cuba in 1948, each card front features a facsimile signature as well as a text block at bottom left that reads "Cortesia De Kellogg's Corn Flakes." Three of the cards in the group have been mailed, each with a 1948 postmark. The five players in the group are: Adolfo Luque, Tomas De La Cruz, Salvador Hernandez, Lazaro Salazar and Roberto Ortiz. The Ortiz card is graded PSA 2 Good. The grades for the other four cards average about the same (Good), with the Luque card VG-EX.
Further details about this set can be found here. $5,500 For a 75-year-old paper-thin card from Cuba, the grade just doesn't get much better than this. Card #41 of Babe Ruth is a key from this very popular 180-card Cuban set, which carries the full name of "Propagandas Montiel presenta Los Reyes del Deporte." As illustrated in the scans, the card is exceptionallly clean with near-perfect centering on both the front and the back. Very strong printing provides truly outstanding appeal.
Further details about this set can be found here. $2,200 Babe Ruth is featured as card #12 in a 12-card Sportsman subset from this very popular Spanish series. It was also the first time that Ruth was featured on a vintage Spanish card. The set was issued in 1940-42 by Barcelona-based Editorial Bruguera publishers. All cards feature colorful artwork which includes both a headshot and an action scene. The sportman's name is printed in block letters below image. It is a numbered subset with numbers printed in one of the upper corners of the card front. Card backs are blank. The Ruth card offered is very clean with sharp corners and no creases (see hi-res images provided).
A set Profile of this series, along with a full Checklist and Gallery of the "Sportsmen" subset, can be found on the Old Cardboard website.. $2,500 This extremely unusual uncut sheet of 25 athletes makes up a complete set, still attached to its original cardboard hanging tab used for display and distribution. Produced in Germany in 1923, the set features fifteen cards of baseball players (including two duplicates, thus 13 different players) highlighted by Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. It also features ten boxers including Jack Dempsey. The very obscure 5-7/8 by 7-7/8 inch sheet represents a complete set. The century-old set is in exceptional condition (click on images to enlarge for detail). As a bonus, we are including a copy of Issue #31 of Old Cardboard magazine, which includes a four-page full color article about the German Transfers set (see reference on the Old Cardboard website provided below). Note: All of the baseball player poses used in this set are the same as those in the W515 strip set.
A Profile of this set, along with a full Checklist and Gallery of "Transfers," can be found on the Old Cardboard website.. |
