H-Cards For Sale
$22,500 ONE OF A KIND: To the best of our knowledge, and after considerable checking around, we believe that this gigantic enlargement of the N154 "Presidential Baseball Club" cards is the only one known to the hobby. The set is listed in the American Card Catalog as Set H814. Measuring 7.5 by 11 inches, this imperial cabinet is more than seven times the size of the corresponding card from the N154 set! Instead of named ballplayers, these cards feature the two presidential candidates of 1888, Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland, with large photographic heads placed on baseball player bodies. Benjamin Harrison is at bat, with Cleveland positioned as catcher. Even if Harrison struck out in this staged scene, he scored a home run in the election of 1888. The H814 mount is black, with advertising in gold lettering. This incredibly fascinating nineteenth-century card is highly collectible for presidential memorabilia collectors as well as vintage sport and non-sport collectors. As the only known example from the H814 set, it is also a critical "must-have" for any baseball card type collector attempting to assemble examples from as many sets listed in the ACC as possible. A truly remarkable and historic piece to add to any collection. Excellent condition with exceptionally strong photograph and labeling. DOUBLE BONUS: As an added bonus, we have included thE N154 card (illustraated above) that uses the same pose. We are also inclulding a copy of Issue #17 (Fall 2008) of Old Cardboard magazine with the H814 card pictured both on the cover and (at nearly full size) in a 6-page article on the Presidential Baseball Club sets. Further details about the H814 and the N154 sets are provided on the Old Cardboard website. $3,250 Extremely rare nineteenth-century large cabinet card featuring two women ballplayers posing in uniform, issued as a premium by the Allen & Ginter tobacco company. The cabinet is gigantic, much larger than a traditional cabinet card, measuring an astounding 7.5 x 13 inches, and features the advertisement for "Virginia Brights Cigarettes," a very early Allen & Ginter's cigarette brand. Dated 1886 (in the photo) the image is from the "Black Stocking Nine" series, which is identified by name on the mount along with advertising. This is only the second time we have ever seen these cards in this size. It is possible that these oversized cabinet cards were actually produced for store display. The traditional cream-colored mount is designed with gold trim along the beveled edges. The oversized cabinet has very minimal chipping in the bottom left corner, and some foxing (most easily seen on the blank reverse). It is otherwise in about Vg-Ex condition. This is a fascinating and extremely rare cabinet photo featuring women playing the game of baseball during the nineteenth century. Based on the half dozen or so examples that we have seen from this set, this photo features, hands down, the most attractive subjects! Just sayin'. Further details about the H807-1 Black Stocking Nine sets can be found on the Old Cardboard website. $480 Not listed in the American Card Catalog, this Detroit Tigers-only issue sponsored by Annis Furs depicts players from the 1934 Detroit team. Cards for a total of 23 players are known for the set. The offered card is that of Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane, who was team manager at the time. The card is graded as SGC3 (Very Good) with very sharp corners. It is in like-new condition with no detectable wear on front or back. Further details about the Annis Furs Set are provided on the Old Cardboard website. |
