1909 St. Louis Republic -- Arthur Griggs
$210

Exceedingly rare supplement produced in 1909 by the St. Louis Republic newspaper. Griggs is one of twelve players featured in a St. Louis Browns subset, with an addidtion twelve St. Louis Cardinals produced as a separate subset.

The enlarged supplements measure 9 by 12 inches. To the best of our knowledge, there are only 2 or 3 examples of each player from this set known to the hobby.

The supplement is in excellent condition with no creases, stains, tears or other significant flaws.

Further details about the St. Louis Republic Supplements set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1935 Detroit Sunday Times Full Baseball Set of Two Supplements
$225

Only two players make up the baseball subset of this somewhat obscure regional series of supplements issued by the Detroit Sunday Times. However, the two players (Hank Greenberg and Charles Gehringer) were the stalwarts of the hometown Tigers team throughout their respective careers and both were later elected into the baseball Hall of Fame.

These 9 by 12-inch supplements are in very nice condition with no pin holes, stains, tears or other significant flaws. Backs are clean except for small (1/2 inch) residuals in each corner from having been mounted in the past.

Further details about this set can be found here.

1909 M101-2 Hughie Jennings
$245

Appealing example of The Sporting News M101-2 Supplements featuring Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings, at that time manager of the Detroit Tigers. The supplement was issued September 30, 1909. The image features one of Jenning's most famous poses. The same pose is also found on his cards in the following sets: the 1917 H801-8 Boston Store, the 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy set, the 1921 E121 American Caramel Series of 80, the 1922 W575-1 Strip card set, among several others. The larger format of this 1909 Sporting News supplement, however, provides far greater detail that the same pose on his card from any of the other sets.

The supplement displays very nicely. It has two tears along the right edge; one about 1 inch and other about 1/4 inch (see hi-res scans). Both are visible on the front and back. Overall, a very solid example without any pinholes or damaged corners.

Further details about the M101-2 Sporting News Set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1962 M118 Baseball Monthly Premium -- Willie Mays
$3450

This striking premium of San Francisco Giants superstar Willie Mays was produced during the middle of his career. It is part of a very scarce set issued in 1962 by the short-lived Baseball Monthly magazine. The enlarged reddish sepia-toned premiums are printed on high-quality paper and measure an impressive 8-1/2 by 11 inches.

This very high-grade Mays example is in absolutely pristine condition (see images for detail).

Further details about the M118 Baseball Monthly set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1909-13 M101-2 Sporting News -- High-grade Complete Set
$90,000

This collection is an outstanding complete set of 100 very scarce and popular supplements distributed between 1909 and 1913 by The Sporting News.

The highly sought set is highlighted by a full body fielding pose of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. In addition, thirty-seven of the supplements feature subjects that are now members of the baseball Hall of Fame including Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, Grover Alexander, Nap Lajoie, Connie Mack, Honus Wagner and many more.

The condition of the collection is well above average for this issue. Serious prospective buyers: please contact us with your questions and for more detailed descriptions needed to thoroughly evaluate the set.

BONUSES: As additional bonuses, this lot includes (1) Three supplements with exceedingly rare and different ads printed on the backs. The ads were used to promote the set and a one-year subscription to The Sporting News. The low grade but very presentable ad backs are shown at right (select to enlarge). They are, from left to right, the backs of supplements for Jake Stahl, Heine Zimmerman and Arnold Hauser.

The second bonus (2) is a copy of Old Cardboard magazine Issue #15 (Spring 2008) with an eight-page full-color article about the M101-2 set along with the image of the Cobb-Wagner supplement featured on the cover. A full gallery printed within the article is based mostly on images of supplements from this collection.

Further details about the M101-2 Set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1917-29 M101-6 Felix Mendelsohn Trio (Bagby, Groh & Veach)
$1,650

Part of a set of about 100 known players, these glossy black-and-white player photos were produced by Chicago publisher Felix Mendelsohn. A little larger than a postcard, these highly collectible cards measure about 4-13/8 by 6-3/8 inches. Because some of the players in the set have multiple poses, it seems clear that the set was produced over a period of several years. The set was offered in ads in The Sporting News at $5 for 100 pictures.

The three very appealing cards offered here include those for Jim Bagby, Bobby Veach and Heinie Groh. They are all very clean on front and back with very little signs of wear (select image to enlarge).

Further details about this set can be found here.

Rare Circa 1909 The St. Louis Republic Baseball Supplement Collection (12) - St. Louis Browns w/Waddell and Wallace
$2,400

Exceedingly rare. There are only two or three examples for each of the players in this series known to the hobby. Recently discovered collection of twelve St. Louis Browns baseball supplements issued by the St. Louis Republic newspaper, circa 1909. These twelve supplements, along with the twelve St. Louis Republic supplements featuring St. Louis Cardinals players that are being offered in a separate lot, originate from a recent find in the St. Louis area.

All indications are that the twenty-four supplements being offered (twelve Browns and twelve Cardinals), represent the complete set as issued. Each supplement features a photo of the player, followed by a short biography, and text reading "Supplement to The St. Louis Republic." The twelve Browns players featured in this lot are Rube Waddell, Bobby Wallace, Bill Dinneen, William Graham, Arthur Griggs, Roy Hartzell, Dan Hoffman, Thomas Jones, Barney Pelty, Al Schweitzer, James Stephens, and George Stone. Based upon the players represented in the collection, 1909 appears to be the probable year of issue. Each 9 by 12-inch supplement is printed on thin paper stock. Each supplement (except for those of Stone, Pelty, and Hartzell, displays a tack hole in each corner that has been professionally repaired. Aside from the restoration, and minor pencil notations on the front of the Schweitzer supplement, the collection is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall.

Further details about the St. Louis Republic set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.
