1889 The Stage Premiums -- Dan Casey
$725

Extremely Rare 1889 The Stage newspsper "supplement" of Daniel Casey, pitcher for the Philadelphia Quakers (now Phillies). The Stage was a theatrical newspaper weekly published in the late 19th Century. In 1889 they issued a series of 14 full-page numbered photos of Philadelphia and New York Giant baseball players. The newspaper (and the portraits) measure 8-1/2 by 11 inches.

Because of their fragile nature, examples from the set are rarely found in as nice condition as the offered Casey. Included with the portrait is an even rarer 11 x 2 1/2 inch column of text from another page in the newspaper giving extensive biographical information on Casey.

Further details about The Stage set, including a set checklist and complete gallery, is provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1884 Columbus Buckeyes Team Cabinet
$1175

This historic cabinet of the American Association's 1884 Columbus Buckeyes is among the earliest photos of a Major League Baseball team. It predates the surge in interest in baseball (and baseball cards) during the late 1880s. In fact, 8 of the 12 players that are pictured in the cabinet (67%) were later featured, individually, in the massive 1887-1890 N172 Old Judge series.

All 12 players (plus the team manager at the center of photo) are hand numbered and identified on the back of the cabinet, which was produced by the Pheifer photographic studio in Columbus.

The photo on the cabinet is fully intact and in excellent condition. The mount (cardboard backing) has been trimmed along the left edge but does not affect the image overlay. A truly historic and one-of-a-kind collectible.

A full scale image of the cabinet is featured in Issue #14 (Winter, 2008) of Old Cardboard Magazine.

1891 Giants Cabinet Card Composite
by Joseph Hall
$4900

In 1891, the New York Giants had an impressive six players on their roster the were later inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. And all six are captured in this 134-year-old seventeen-player team composit produced by famed New York photographer Joseph Hall.

The players are conveniently grouped on the card by position, as follows -- Pitchers (top row, left to right): HOFer John Ewing, HOFer Mickey Welch, HOFer Tim Keefe, HOFer Amos Rusie and Jack Sharrott; Catchers (second row): Lew Whistler, HOFer Buck Ewing-Captain, Dick Buckley and Artie Clark; In-Field (third row): Jack Glasscock, Charley Bassett, Danny Richardson, HOFer Roger Connor; and Out-Field (bottom row): HOFer James O'Rourke, Mike Tiernan, George Gore and Jim Mutrie-Manager.

The title centered at the bottom of the 6-1/2 by 4-1/4 inch card reads: "NEW YORK B. B. CLUB, 1891" and "Copyright J. Hall." The card back is blank.

The card and central photographic image has light creasing. Corners are worn with a small pinhole at top center. The damaged corner at the bottom right does not affect the central image (cardboard backing only). Please see high-resolution scans for condition detail.

Overall, a very appealing card with exceptional rarity and early baseball history.

1895 N566 Newsboy Cabinet (Hall of Famer John Ward)
$3700

Hall of Famer John Ward is one of only two Hall of Famers found in this highly collected nineteenth century set. The offered card displays one of two poses of Ward in the set (this card features the "standing with bat" pose). The card has a sharp high-contrast image.

Light spot staining and what appears to be a very small folded corner of the photo at the upper left part of the card are visible in the scan. Otherwise, the card displays a very strong photo image with no significant flaws on the front or back of the card (see scans). Overall, a very appealing cabinet card from a very popular set.

Further details about the 1895 N566 Newsboy Cabinet set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1890 Stevens Cabinet Features the Chicago Pirates of the Players League
$4900

In 1890, Stevens Art Studios of Chicago produced a very rare set of about 16 cards (15 cards for individual players and one composite team card that encompassed all 15 players), all members of the Chicago Pirates team of the newly formed Players League.

The example offered here is the team composite cabinet card from that set. Each player (except Latham) is identified in neatly handwritten ink lettering, possibly applied by the studio at the time of production.

According to a note handwritten at the bottom right, this card was apparently gifted (22 years after its production) to "Mr. Chas. A Comiskey -- Compliments of F. Y. Hill, 5/24/1912." HOFer Comiskey not only played 1st base on the team, but was team captian and manager, and occupies the top center position on the card.

The set is extremely scarce, with only 1 or 2 cards known for some of the players. Several of the players are not cataloged by the hobby.

High Resolution scans of the front and back of the card illustrate its markings. There is a small pin hole near the center at the top of the card. Overall, a very appealing card with exceptional early baseball history.

1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes -- Jim Mutrie (Manager; New York)
$365     SOLD

This card of of New York Giants manager Jim Mutrie is from the popular N172 Old Judge cigarettes set.

The card displays a strongly printed image with no significant visible flaws (see scan). Visible signs of wear on both front and back, including slightly rounded corners and very light stains on back. Image is sharper than appears in scan.

Further details about the N172 Old Judge set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1888 Scarce "Scrapps Tobacco" Die-Cuts
$825

A beautifully lithographed high-grade example from the "Scrapps Tobacco" set. This card features St. Louis Browns pitcher David L. Foutz (who later became manager of the Brooklyn Bridegrooms).

Note: Cards from this set were lightly embossed at the factory. However, some vintage collectors are unaware of the embossing because it is virtually non-detectable on images of the fronts and, due to heavy stains and damage on many cards, often not visible or barely visible on the backs. The offered card is among the few that we have seen with stronger embossing that is readily identifiable on a very clean back. View enlarged scan for detail.

Further details about the 1888 Scrapps Die-Cut set can be found on the Old Cardboard website.

1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes -- Tug Arundel (Indianapolis)
$295

An attractive example from the N172 Old Judge cigarettes set, this card features Indianapolis catcher Tug Arundel.

The card is in Poor condition as the result of several flaws. One is a crease that extends the vertical length of the card. It is visible on both the front and back but does not appear to break the surface. Another smaller crease is visible at the lower right corner (as viewed from the front). Light pencil marks are also found on the card back. Still a very appealing high-contrast card approaching 135 years of age. The image is sharper than appears in the scan.

1887 N172 Brown's Champions -- Welch
$280

This graded card of Curt Welch (misspelled as Welsh on the card and the holder) is from the popular N172 Brown's Old Judge subset.

The strongly printed high-grade front contains no visible flaws (see scan). The overall SGC 10 (Poor) grade assigned to the card is no doubt based on the paper damage caused by the careless removal of the card from an album.

c. 1890 Police Gazette Cabinet -- John "Jocko" Fields
$3500

These cabinet cards were issued and distributed to promote sales of The Police Gazette periodical in the late 1880's and early 1890's. They are sepia photographs affixed to a 4-1/2 x 6-1/2-inch thick-cardboard backing. The effect in their presentation, with a darker backing than is found on most of the era's cabinets, is striking. The offered card pictures John J. Fields, also known as Jocko Fields. A lifetime .271 hitter, Fields spent six seasons playing baseball from 1887 to 1892. His first three seasons were played with the Pittsburg Alleghenys in the National League. Police Gazettes are some of the most difficult of all 19th Century issues and are missing from most type card collectors want lists. The blank back is near flawless and the cabinet card's overall grade is SGC 60 EX.

1888 N135 Duke "Talk of the Diamond" Complete Raw Set with Graded Bonus
$3600

Each card in this 25-card unnumbered set contains two color drawings laid out in a horizontal format. The smaller drawing on the left contains the full-length pose of a baseball player, while the larger right portion of the card contains a comic non-baseball related image. The set has been assigned the number N135 in the American Card Catalog.

The two images on each card are tied together (sometimes very loosely) by a double entendre contained in the title at the bottom of the card. Thus, as in the example card above, the title is illustrated in both baseball and non-baseball themes.

Overall, the cards present very nicely and make a colorful and impressive display. As seen in the hi-res images of the set, there are several cards with creasing, small paper loss on the back and some staining. All cards are fully intact and most should grade Good with some lower and some a little higher.

BONUS: The SGC-graded "A Pitcher in the Box" example shown in the image is included as an added bonus. It is a duplicate of one of the cards in the set so that all 50 raw cards could be displayed together in an album while having one graded example to better handle and view the front and back detail. In addition, a copy of Old Cardboard Issue #31 (see reference below) will be included as a second bonus for this lot.

N184 Baseball Fronts

N184 Baseball Backs
1887 N184 Kimball's Champions Complete Multi-Sport Set
$4060     SOLD

Only four baseball players were part of this 50-card set entitled "Champions of Games and Sports." A variety of other sports represented in the set range from Broncho Rider to Tight-Rope Walker, with a lot of other "games and sports" in between. The set is assigned number N184 in the American Card Catalog.

The four baseball players in the set are E. A. Burch, Dell Darling, Hardie Henderson and James "Tip" O'Neill (misspelled as O'Neil on the card).

O'Neill was the best known of the four, and batted a whopping .435 the year the Kimball set was issued. Because of his practice of tipping "strike" balls in an effort to get a base on balls, he gained his popular nickname "Tip" O'Neill.

The set's very attractive full color designs feature the athlete's portrait printed at the top of the card. A scene dipcting the sport in which he/she is champion is provided below the portrait.

The four baseball players in the set are all graded as either SGC 2 (Good) or SGC 3 (Very Good) and all present extremely well. Most of the non-baseball cards would also grade as good or very good on the card fronts (with 2-3 exceptions that have significant horizontal creasing across the middle of the card fronts). The card backs, however, are much lower grade with many having major stains, paper loss and other flaws after being removed from an album. Please contact us for more detail.

In summary, the beauty (and value) of this set lies in the exceptional appeal of the four baseball players, with a very presentable complete-set display of card fronts and very poor condition of non-baseball backs.

A Profile of the N184 Kimball's Champions set can be found on the on the Old Cardboard website..

1893 N142 Duke Cabinet -- Nash
$2525

Because the lithographs in the set are printed on oversized cabinet cards that feature only four baseball players, it is sometimes said to be simultaneously among the largest and the smallest sets ever produced.

The oversized (6 by 9-1/2 inch) cards in this 1893 N142 set are among the rarest of all ninteenth century issues, and the only full color cabinet-sized cards issued before 1900. The set's four cards are considered by many collectors to be the most strikingly beautiful baseball cards ever produced.

This example of Boston Nationals third baseman Billy Nash is in very nice condition with non-distracting flaws (crease at upper left corner, paper loss at upper left border and on white background below portrait and left of center). Light vertical staining on back. Please see high-res scans for condition detail. An overall very appealing example from this exceedingly rare and highly prized set.
