1884 Lawson Card Game -- Complete Set
$975

The Lawson Base Ball Card Game was the first card game designed to mimic a real baseball game. Moreover, it is arguably the earliest vintage baseball card set ever produced.

Thomas W. Lawson, an avid baseball fan, designed, patented and promoted the game in 1884 at the age of just 27 years.

The next year, in 1885, Lawson also organized tournaments for the game with actual Major League players as participants and with substantial cash and trophies awarded as prizes for the winners.

The Lawson game consists of 36 cards. These include 9 "Strikers," 9 "Plays" (Balls, Base Hits, Home Run, etc.; cards with red icons printed at the corners), and 18 "Perfecting Plays" (Forced Out; Wild Throw, etc.; cards with blue icons printed at the corners).

The offered lot inlcudes all 36 playing cards, a "Value" card that displays card rankings, an instructions booklet and the original box in which the cards were packaged. All show moderate wear but are good condition. The cards are all in Very Good+ condition without any tears, stains, creases or other siginificant flaws.

BONUS: This lot also includes a brand new (2008) high-quality replica set with box and detailed game instructions. With it, contestants can experience playing Larson's Game without risking wear and damage to the original 1884 set.

NOTE ALSO: Years after Lawson invented the Lawson Card Game, he penned and published a blockbuster classic book in 1902 entitled "The History of the Americas Cup." A copy is available for sale at the Old Cardboard eBay eBay Store. Receive a $100 discount if purchased the same day as this lot.

Note: A Set Profile, Player Checklist and Gallery of Cards for the 1884 Lawson Card Game is provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1888 WG1 Game Card Poster
$30

Produced in 1888, the WG1 Game Card set highlights players for each of nine positions from each of the eight National League teams of the period. As seen from the gallery, all player positions (rows in the matrix) are designed using the same pose, while each player on the same team (columns in the matrix) is outfitted with the same team uniform.

This 11-by-17-inch poster graphically displays the colorful 52-card deck as in the matrix described above. The poster was first displayed as a centerfold for Issue #25 ((Spring 2011) of Old Cardboard magazine.

The posters were part of small group of centerfold spreads that were set aside by the printer and never folded or staple-bound into the magazine. They were processed as a limited edition of just 45 posters. A one-page article written by vintage collector Kevin Struss is also printed on the back of the poster, as it was in the magazine.

For additional details about the set and the card game, see Old Cardboard magazine (Issue #25, p. 19-21).
